Mother Frances Streitel: Her assignment as a young Maria Stern Franciscan

Amalia Frances Rose Streitel aka Mother Frances Streitel, Foundress of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother—Amalia entered the postulancy (first step in becoming a sister) of the Maria Stern Franciscans on September 25, 1866.   She tells us that her one wish was to pursue a ministry in service to the sick.  That request, however, was denied and she was asked to continue her studies in French and music.  Following her profession of vows she was assigned to teaching, a profession for which she was already prepared before entering the convent.

Today, it is the preference of my religious community, the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother, that young women entering the postulancy have completed a college degree and have some working experiences that will enhance their ministry as women religious. We are looking for young adults with leadership skills, a thirst for continuing to develop a personal relationship with the Lord (hence continuing to develop a strong spiritual life), desire to be doing God’s will in building the Kingdom, deepening their baptismal call to further the faith and the mission of the Church, and passionate about giving life to the charism of the congregation.
