Not helping angels but coming to our aid

In today’s second reading, Hebrews  2: 14-18, we read: “Surely he did not help angels but rather the descendants of Abraham [and Sarah]; therefore, he had to become like…[their] brothers and sisters in every way, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest before God to expiate the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested through what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested” (Heb 2: 1-18).   No wonder Satan is so angry with God and jealous of us.  And no wonder Satan will do anything possible to blind us to God’s ways, deafen our ears from hearing God’s voice and harden our hearts to God’s love. He does not want us to have what he forfeited by his disobedience. However, God is on our side.  His love is so genuine and so deep that God has truly become like a brother/sister to us “in every way…to expiate” us from sin and free us from Satan’s snares.  Jesus knows us through and through, as He was fully human like us. He knows what it is like to experience relationships and human existence from the inside out!  God  knows, from his experience as a human being,  the delightfulness of being loved, cherished, respected and honored; the joy of healthy, trusted relationships and the thrill of success.  God also knows from taking on human nature, becoming fully human, what it is like to be betrayed, putdown, cornered, ridiculed, arrested, abused, spit at, scorned, mocked. He knows the humiliation and shame of failures, real and imagined.  Yes, Jesus, did not deem equality with God something to be exploited but became like all of us and modeled obedience to God even to His death on the cross, so that, through the cross, we’d know the glory of God both here and now and for all eternity. What a humble, caring, compassionate God!
